Study Questions on the Life of St. Mary of Egypt

1. "It is good to keep close the secret of a King, but to reveal gloriously the works of God." This is what the angel said to Tobit after the miraculous healing of his eyes from blindness, after all the dangers through which he had led him and from which he had delivered him because of his piety.

How does this Scripture relate to Zossima? In what ways was he blind before meeting Mary the Egyptian? In what ways was he healed?

2. What is the role of the River Jordan in the narrative?

3. Describe the appearance of St. Mary of Egypt in the story. In what ways can it be said that her body is a metaphor for her soul?

4. Why is Mary naked in the desert and why must she be covered for Zossima? How is she covered in his presence?

5. Describe Mary's early life, and the events which led to her repentance. Who is instrumental in her conversion?

6. Notice the times at which key events occur. What is their biblical symbolism?

7. How does Mary know the truths of Scripture?

8. In what ways do Mary's actions in the narrative parallel/symbolize those of Christ?

9. "The lion went into the depths of the desert as if it were a lamb..." Comment, please, on the role and symbolism of animals toward the end of the narrative.

10. How old is Zossima when he dies?
